Il disco
Il disco, caratterizzato da una bassa qualità audio, è considerato da molti un pilastro del black metal[1]. Musicalmente si caratterizza per la presenza di scream molto aggressivi, di blast beat e riff molto rapidi e violenti, mentre i testi trattano principalmente i temi dell'inverno e della guerra[1]. Si tratta inoltre del primo album in cui sono presenti riferimenti al Blashyrkh, un mondo immaginario inventato da Abbath e Demonaz, che sarà presente in tutti gli album successivi.

L'album è stato ristampato nel 2000 con l'aggiunta delle tracce dell'EP Immortal.
Curiosità
Da Grim And Frostbitten Kingdoms e Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark) verranno estratti due video. Da segnalare nel video di Grim And Frostbitten Kingdoms la presenza di Hellhammer dietro le pelli.

Battles in the North is the third studio album by Norwegian black metal band Immortal. It was released on May 15, 1995 through Osmose Productions. It picks up where its predecessor, Pure Holocaust, left off, featuring extreme tempos, low-fidelity production, and lyrics about coldness or wintery landscapes. Battles in the North es el tercer álbum de la banda noruega de black metal Immortal. Recoge lo que dejó su predecesor Pure Holocaust, con velocidad extrema y letras que tratan sobre paisajes invernales y fríos. Así como Pure Holocaust, también es considerado un álbum clásico en el black metal. Este álbum continúa con el concepto de Blashyrkh, un reino mítico creado por Abbath y Demonaz, aparece en sus letras, concepto que continuará apareciendo en sus posteriores álbumes. Se hicieron también videos para las canciones "Grim and Frostbitten Kingdoms", y Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark).
