Diretto da Pierre e François Lamoureux, Breaking the Fourth Wall - Live from the Boston Opera House contiene il concerto tenuto dal gruppo il 25 marzo 2014 al Boston Opera House di Boston. Insieme a loro hanno partecipato come ospiti d'eccezione il coro e l'orchestra della Berklee College of Music.[1]

Riguardo al concerto, il chitarrista John Petrucci, produttore del DVD, ha dichiarato:[1]

«In svariati modi, questo è stato un gran ritorno a casa per il gruppo, data la storia delle origini e dei legami dei Dream Theater con il Berklee. Essendo stati io e John allievi [dell'istituto] ed essendo stato Mike un professore per dieci anni, abbiamo visto l'opportunità di esibirci insieme agli studenti del Berklee come un'enorme emozione ed onore. Siamo estremamente grati per il duro lavoro di ogni singolo componente nell'aver reso questo evento speciale una realtà [...] Tutti i musicisti e cantanti del Berklee College hanno svolto un lavoro eccezionale quella notte ed è stato fantastico avere avuto uno dei suoi studenti, Eren Başbuğ, che li ha orchestrati e condotti dal vivo all'Opera House dopo essere stato parte della nostra ultima pubblicazione in studio.»

Breaking the Fourth Wall - Live from the Boston Opera House è stato pubblicato il 30 settembre dalla Roadrunner Records nei formati BD, doppio DVD e un cofanetto che racchiude il BD e tre CD.[1]

Il DVD è stato inoltre anticipato dalla pubblicazione delle versioni dal vivo di The Looking Glass e di Strange Deja Vu, pubblicate rispettivamente il 21 agosto 2014 e il 15 settembre 2014 attraverso il canale YouTube del gruppo.[2][3]

Breaking the Fourth Wall is the eighth live album and video by American progressive metal/rock band Dream Theater, recorded live at the Boston Opera House on March 25, 2014 and released on September 29 on CD, DVD, and Blu-ray; the DVD and Blu-ray releases include bonus features. The release was announced by the band on August 21, 2014 and a promotional video featuring the live version of "The Looking Glass" was uploaded to YouTube. Another promotional video featuring the live version of "Strange Déjà Vu" was uploaded on September 15, 2014.
