L'album è il secondo dei Byrds pubblicato nella formazione costituita da Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons e Skip Battin e fu registrato principalmente all'inizio del 1971, mentre la band era nel mezzo di un estenuante giro di concerti.[6] Come risultato, il gruppo ebbe molto poco tempo per rifinire le nuove canzoni prima dell'inizio delle sessioni in studio di registrazione, e molto del materiale fu da loro solo abbozzato. Byrdmaniax fu accolto negativamente dalla critica, in particolare negli Stati Uniti, e contribuì non poco al declino commerciale e di popolarità dei Byrds.

Il disco raggiunse la posizione numero 46 nella classifica Billboard Top LPs ma non entrò in classifica nel Regno Unito.[7][8] La canzone I Trust (Everything Is Gonna Work Out Alright) venne pubblicata come singolo il 7 maggio 1971 in Gran Bretagna ma fallì l'entrata nelle classifiche.[5][8] Un secondo singolo estratto dall'album, Glory, Glory, fu pubblicato il 20 agosto 1971 e raggiunse la posizione numero 110 nella classifica statunitense di Billboard, ma fu nuovamente ignorato nel Regno Unito.[9] Byrdmaniax rimane uno dei dischi meno apprezzati nel catalogo dei Byrds, in gran parte a causa dell'incongrua aggiunta di archi, sezioni fiati e cori gospel, aggiunti dal produttore Terry Melcher e dall'arrangiatore Paul Polena in fase di missaggio, secondo quanto riferito senza il consenso della band.[10]

Byrdmaniax ist das zehnte Musikalbum der US-amerikanischen Folk-Rock-Band The Byrds. Es erschien am 23. Juni 1971 auf dem Label Columbia Records. Nachdem die Byrds sich mit Ballad of Easy Rider und (Untitled) wieder von dem Misserfolg des von Fans und Kritikern gleichermaßen schlecht aufgenommenen Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde erholt hatten, erlaubten sie sich mit Byrdmaniax einen weiteren Flop. In den Vereinigten Staaten erreichte das Album #46 der Pop-Charts, aus denen es sich recht schnell wieder verabschiedete, in Großbritannien kam es nicht zu einem Charteintritt des Albums. Die schlechten Kritiken und Verkaufszahlen hatte das Album wohl den orchestralen Arrangements und dem Gospelchor zu verdanken, die Produzent Terry Melcher und Arrangeur Paul Polena dem Album beimischten, und im Gegensatz zu den eher sparsam instrumentierten früheren Alben der Band standen.

Byrdmaniax is the tenth album by the American rock band the Byrds. It was released in June 1971 on Columbia Records[1] at a time of renewed commercial and critical success for the band, due to the positive reception that their two previous albums, Ballad of Easy Rider and (Untitled), had received.[2][3] The album was the second by the Byrds to feature the Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons, and Skip Battin line-up of the band and was mostly recorded in early 1971, while the band were in the midst of an exhausting tour schedule.[2][4] As a result, the band had little time to hone their new songs before recording commenced and thus, much of the material on the album is underdeveloped.[2] Byrdmaniax was poorly received upon release, particularly in the United States, and did much to undermine the Byrds' new-found popularity.[2]
