Per la maggior parte, l'album fu registrato e prodotto dagli stessi Byrds a Londra, Inghilterra, nel corso di cinque intensi giorni di lavoro in studio nel luglio 1971.[6] Venne pubblicato velocemente come una sorta di risposta alle reazioni negative e al fallimento commerciale del precedente album Byrdmaniax, un tentativo di stemperare le pessime recensioni ricevute sulla stampa musicale (specialmente negli Stati Uniti).[7][8]

Byrdmaniax era stato pubblicato con pesanti aggiunte di orchestrazioni e cori, che il produttore discografico Terry Melcher aveva inserito nell'album, presumibilmente senza il consenso della band.[7][8] Il gruppo era rimasto insoddisfatto del risultato e Farther Along era inteso come la loro risposta a quella che percepivano come la sovrapproduzione di Melcher, nonché un tentativo di dimostrare che potevano produrre un album che consideravano superiore a Byrdmaniax.[7][8] Il biografo dei Byrds Johnny Rogan ha suggerito che la rapidità con la quale il gruppo pianificò e registrò Farther Along ebbe come risultato un LP che scontentò la band stessa e che non riuscì a riparare il danno alla loro reputazione.[9]

Farther Along ist das elfte Musikalbum der US-amerikanischen Folk-Rock-Band The Byrds. Es erschien am 17. November 1971 auf dem Label Columbia Records. Bestürzt über die schlechten Kritiken und Verkaufszahlen von Byrdmaniax, mit dem die Band selbst auch unzufrieden gewesen war, reisten die vier Musiker kurzerhand nach London, um dort noch ein Album aufzunehmen und diesmal selbst zu produzieren. Das Album wurde von der Kritik etwas wärmer aufgenommen als sein Vorgänger, stellte sich jedoch als kommerzieller Reinfall heraus. Es erreichte in den Staaten seinen Höhepunkt bei #152 der Pop-Charts; in Großbritannien kam es nicht zu einem Charteintritt.

Farther Along is the eleventh album by the American rock band the Byrds and was released in November 1971 on Columbia Records.[1] For the most part, the album was recorded and produced by the Byrds themselves in London, England, over the course of five work-intensive days in July 1971.[2] It was quickly released as a reaction to the commercial failure of the Byrds' previous album, Byrdmaniax, and as an attempt to stem the criticism that album was receiving in the music press.[3][4]
