Il disco

Registrato durante il periodo in cui il gruppo era al punto più basso della sua popolarità (era stato pubblicato già da un anno il fallimentare concept album Music from "The Elder"), l'album registra un ritorno alle sonorità hard rock\heavy metal che nel decennio precedente avevano contribuito al successo della band.

All'inizio delle registrazioni dell'album, i Kiss erano praticamente rimasti in tre a causa dell'abbandono di Ace Frehley, non conforme al nuovo stile musicale adottato dal gruppo. Ciononostante il chitarrista sarà ritratto nella copertina dell'album e accreditato nelle note. Il suo posto verrà preso ufficialmente da Vinnie Vincent (che sarà presente come chitarrista solista in gran parte delle tracce e che collaborerà nella stesura dei testi nonostante non sia accreditato nelle note), nonostante Frehley compaia ancora con il gruppo in video promozionali come quello del brano I Love It Loud (sua ultima apparizione coi Kiss prima della reunion). In due brani, la title track e I still love you, verrà ingaggiato Robben Ford come lead guitar.

Nonostante le buone previsioni l'album, pur vendendo più copie di Music from "The Elder", si tradurrà inizialmente in un parziale fallimento commerciale, che provocherà anche la cancellazione di molte date del tour del gruppo negli Stati Uniti. Solamente in tempi recenti l'album è stato giudicato dai fans del gruppo uno dei migliori mai registrati dalla band.

Questo fu anche l'ultimo album dei Kiss in studio con il make-up e per il restante decennio ottantiano daranno una svolta al loro stile musicale, avvicinandosi al genere glam metal, genere che loro stessi hanno contribuito a far nascere. Riprenderanno l'uso delle maschere sul finire degli anni novanta, a partire dal disco Psycho Circus.

Creatures of the Night ist das zehnte Studioalbum der US-amerikanischen Hard-Rock-Band Kiss, das 1982 erschien. Diese Langspielplatte stellte – zusammen mit dem einige Monate zuvor erschienenen Kompilationsalbum Killers – eine Zäsur in der Musikgeschichte der Gruppe dar,[1] unter anderem deshalb, weil es sich um das letzte Album vor der Demaskierungsphase der Musiker handelte. Kritiker hielten das Werk für eines der musikalisch gelungensten Alben der Band. Es erhielt den Gold-Status.

Creatures of the Night is the tenth studio album by American rock band Kiss, released in 1982. It was the band's last for Casablanca Records, the only label for which Kiss had recorded up to that point. The album was dedicated to the memory of Casablanca founder and early Kiss supporter Neil Bogart,[1] who had died of cancer during the recording sessions. It is also the band's last album recorded with Ace Frehley credited as an official member and their first album with Vinnie Vincent, as the initially uncredited lead guitarist. Vincent would later be credited but not featured on the cover of the 1985 reissue of the album. It was also Kiss' last album to feature the band with their trademark makeup until their 1998 release Psycho Circus.
