La canzone è stata scritta da Robert Lange e dalla cantante Shania Twain, prodotta da Max Martin e Rami. In questa canzone Britney spiega al proprio "amore", come lui non dovrebbe fare in modo che lei sappia le cose da terze persone, e da qui appunto il titolo "don't let me be the last to know" ("Non lasciare che io sia l'ultima a sapere").

Stranamente questo pezzo è stato escluso dalla raccolta di successi della cantante Greatest Hits: My Prerogative del 2004, ed è incluso solo nella versione inglese della raccolta.

Il video di Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know è stato diretto da Herb Ritts e girato in Florida, con la stessa Britney e il modello francese Brice Durand su una spiaggia e tra le onde del mare celestino. Britney Spears è vestita solo con un bikini e uno short blu, mentre Durand ha indosso soltanto il costume marrone da bagno. Buona parte delle scene girate sono eseguite di sera, per la delicatezza delle coccole e l'amore soave e spontaneo; alcune sono sfumate e confuse, per rimandare appunto a delle coccole delicate e dolci.

L'obiettivo della telecamera è dissipato nella spiaggia serale, con i due ragazzi che sono avvinghiati fuori da una capanna, mentre il fuoco d'un breve falò scoppietta vicino a loro. La ragazza comincia a cantare difatti con dolcezza al suo ragazzo, disteso mentre l'ascolta, e si fanno intanto le coccole e le effusioni d'amore. Di giorno, i due vanno al mare per divertirsi insieme, mentre lui l'abbraccia e lei sorride, coccolata e vagheggiata, e poi va su un albero.

Qui viene raggiunta poco dopo da Durand: i baci non mancano, lui l'avvinghia e la bacia, mentre Britney sull'albero ripete il ritornello e, di tanto in tanto, le si inquadra il fondoschiena. Intanto il suo uomo la prende a sé e la coccola di nuovo, per poi tornare di sera a stare insieme a lei che s'appoggia alla sua spalla. Il fuoco scoppietta nuovamente con l'oscuramento dell'obiettivo.

Indiscrezioni vogliono che Justin Timberlake, fidanzato, all'epoca del video, con Britney Spears, si fosse mostrato molto geloso per le scene d'amore fra il modello e la fidanzata. Anche la madre della cantante, Lynne Spears, chiese, e ottenne, l'eliminazione di alcune sequenze del video perché alcune scene erano sessualmente esplicite.

"Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know" is a song by American singer Britney Spears from her second studio album, Oops!... I Did It Again (2000). It was released on March 12, 2001, by Jive Records as the fourth and final single from the album. After meeting with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange in Switzerland, Spears recorded several songs for the album, including "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know", which she considered one of her favorites on the album. Additional lyrics were written by guitar player Keith Scott and country pop singer Shania Twain. The pop ballad speaks of a woman wanting to hear her boyfriend say that he loves her, and is sonically similar to David Bowie and Iggy Pop's song "China Girl" (1983).
