Si tratta dell'unica pubblicazione dei Queensrÿche fronteggiati da Geoff Tate, dopo che questi era stato licenziato nel 2012 dai rimanenti componenti della formazione originaria.

A partire dal 13 marzo 2013 sono state rese disponibili per l'ascolto attraverso iTunes le anteprime di ciascun brano dell'album,[2] mentre il 3 aprile 2013 è stato pubblicato per il download digitale il singolo Cold,[3] successivamente uscito anche in formato 7".[4]

L'album è stato infine reso disponibile per lo streaming una settimana prima della pubblicazione attraverso SoundCloud.[5]

Frequency Unknown is a studio album released under the name Queensrÿche; it was released by Geoff Tate's temporary version of the band, before a settlement determined that only the other band members were entitled to use the name Queensrÿche. The album was released on Cleopatra Records' sub label, Deadline Music, on April 23, 2013 as music download, on CD and limited edition vinyl LP in the United States[1] and on May 21, 2013 as audio cassette which excludes the re-recorded classics,[5] and on June 3, 2013 on CD in the United Kingdom.[2]
