Si tratta di un doppio album composto da due volumi, Essence e The Hard Shoulder: il primo presenta i brani collegati tra loro, formando un unico tema sonoro, mentre il secondo una serie di brani slegati dal concept.[3] Il titolo deriva da una massima di Buddha: Non esiste la strada per la felicità, la felicità è la strada.


Promozione


Ancor prima della pubblicazione del disco, l'8 febbraio 2008 i Marillion hanno diffuso uno spezzone del brano Real Tears for Sale, tratto da Volume 2: The Hard Shoulder.[4] Il titolo dell'album, insieme a quello dei due volumi, è stato reso noto dal gruppo il 12 marzo seguente attraverso il loro sito.[5] Il 23 luglio è stato reso disponibile per il download gratuito una versione ridotta del brano Whatever Is Wrong with You, attraverso la quale i fan hanno potuto partecipare a un contest atto alla realizzazione di un proprio video musicale.[6]

Happiness Is the Road è stato inizialmente distribuito, ad esclusione del mercato statunitense e polacco, esclusivamente sul sito del gruppo in edizione deluxe con i due volumi e standard sotto forma di CD singolo o doppio LP per ciascun volume.[7] Il 2 febbraio 2009 l'album è stato commercializzato anche nei tradizionali negozi di musica attraverso la EMI.[8]

Nel mese di novembre 2008 i Marillion hanno intrapreso una tournée europea in supporto all'album, replicandolo tra gennaio e febbraio 2009 sempre in Europa.[9][10] Dalla data tenuta a Colonia è stato tratto l'album dal vivo Happiness Is Cologne, uscito nel 2009.

Happiness Is the Road (englisch für „Zufriedenheit ist der Weg“) ist das fünfzehnte Studioalbum der britischen Progressive-Rock-Band Marillion. Es wurde am 20. Oktober 2008 veröffentlicht und besteht aus zwei Teilen: Happiness Is the Road Vol. 1: Essence und Happiness Is the Road Vol. 2: The Hard Shoulder.

Happiness Is the Road is Marillion's 15th studio album, released as two separate album-length volumes respectively titled Essence and The Hard Shoulder. The overall playing time is 110 minutes (116 including a hidden track), taking it to double album length. According to the band, the album combines their rock sound with "elements of pop, dub and soul and is influenced by artists as diverse as The Beach Boys and Marvin Gaye to Interpol, The Doors, Traffic, Pink Floyd and David Bowie. The album also sees Marillion experimenting with a host of new instruments including, Dulcimers, Glockenspiels, a Harmonium, French Horns and even Sleigh bells, a Harp and Zither." The title track "Happiness Is the Road" was inspired by Eckhart Tolle's book The Power of Now.[3] The album's artwork was created by the Spanish artist Antonio Seijas in co-operation with Marillion's long-time designer Carl Glover.
