È stato pubblicato come primo singolo dell'album Into the Fire; la canzone ha raggiunto la sesta posizione della Billboard Hot 100 e la seconda posizione della Billboard Rock Tracks. Nel 1987 ha ricevuto il premio Canadian Music Publisher's Association Rock Song Of The Year Award.[2] La canzone è presente anche nell'album Live! Live! Live! e nelle raccolte So Far So Good e Anthology.[2]


Storia del brano


«Il brano è stato in parte ispirato al film noir classico "Il terzo uomo", con il brillante attore-regista Orson Welles. Il buio della lirica è stato ulteriormente influenzato da un viaggio di Adams che ha fatto a Berlino nel marzo 1986 prima della caduta del Muro di Berlino. "Heat of the Night" ha raggiunto la 6° posizione della Billboard Hot 100 nel maggio 1987, è stato l'unico singolo dell'album Into the Fire a raggiungere il successo nella classifica Billboard. Ho un rimpianto su questo brano ... "mi piacerebbe aver sentito fra i cori Lisa Dal Bello, Sharon Lee Williams e Colina Phillips". Adams offre una superba prestazione vocale, per non parlare del suo ottimo lavoro con la chitarra solista (un evento raro, come fa di solito lascia il lavoro solista a Keith Scott).[2]»

Il brano è stato prodotto da Adams e Bob Clearmountain; registrato da Bob Clearmountain nel settembre 1986 presso i Cliffhanger Studios, a Vancouver; mixato da Bob Clearmountain nel gennaio 1987 presso gli AIR Studios di Londra.[2]

Il video musicale è stato diretto dal regista statunitense Wayne Isham.[3] Uno scatto proveniente dalle sessioni di registrazione dello stesso è stato usato per la copertina dell'album Into the Fire.
