Vendite e successo


Il disco, grazie anche a una sfacciata campagna di marketing in cui il cantante paragonò il suo lavoro di debutto a Sgt. Pepper's dei Beatles, esordì al primo posto della classifica britannica con un milione di copie vendute in soli tre giorni.[17] Terence Trent D'Arby, autore e polistrumentista, per via del suo talento, ispirò fervidi confronti con i maggiori nomi dell'epoca - Michael Jackson e Prince - fino ad essere associato ad alcuni dei più influenti capostipiti della musica: Sam Cooke, James Brown e Jimi Hendrix.[16]

Grazie alle hit Wishing Well (UK #4), If You Let Me Stay (#7) e Sign Your Name (#2), il disco debuttò al primo posto nel Regno Unito e tornò in cima alla classifica diversi mesi dopo per sette settimane. Negli Stati Uniti il riscontro iniziale fu invece più tiepido, fino a quando l'album non riuscì a conquistare la quarta posizione della Billboard 200, spinto dal singolo Wishing Well, arrivato primo nella Billboard Hot 100 circa un anno dopo la pubblicazione del disco.[18] L'album è stato premiato con il BRIT Award al miglior esordiente internazionale e con il Grammy Award alla migliore performance vocale maschile R&B.

Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby is the debut studio album by Terence Trent D'Arby. It was released in July 1987 on Columbia Records, and debuted at number one in the UK, spending a total of nine weeks (non-consecutively) at the top of the UK Albums Chart. It hit number 1 in Australia and Switzerland. It was eventually certified 5× Platinum (for sales of 1.5 million copies). Worldwide, the album sold a million copies within the first three days of going on sale.[8] The album was also a hit in the US, although its success was slower. It was released there in October 1987, eventually peaking at number four on May 7, 1988,[9] – the same week that the single "Wishing Well" hit number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. It did peak higher on the Billboard R&B Albums chart at number one around the same time.[10]
