Janis Joplin incise la canzone per il suo ultimo album Pearl solo pochi giorni prima della sua morte, avvenuta il 4 ottobre 1970. Nella versione originale Bobby McGee è una donna[2][3]; Janis Joplin, amica di Kris Kristofferson dall'inizio della sua carriera fino alla morte per overdose, e per un certo periodo sua fidanzata, cambiò il sesso del protagonista della canzone ed alcune parole del testo.
Kris Kristofferson ammise di non aver scritto Me and Bobby McGee per Janis, ma successivamente associò sempre la canzone alla sua figura.

Gordon Lightfoot released a version that reached number 1 on the Canadian country charts in 1970. Jerry Lee Lewis released a version that was number 1 on the country charts in December 1971/January 1972 as the "B" side of "Would You Take Another Chance On Me."
