L'album è interamente strumentale fatta eccezione per l'introduzione del brano Fainting in Coils, che consiste in un breve passo tratto dal capitolo IX del romanzo Alice's Adventures in Wonderland di Lewis Carroll, letto da Sam Adler (all'epoca capo della E.G. Records assieme a Mark Fenwick), da Anthea Norman-Taylor (manager discografica e futura moglie di Brian Eno) e dal bandleader e batterista del gruppo Bill Bruford, nelle rispettive parti del narratore, di Alice e della Falsa Tartaruga.
Il brano di apertura Hell's Bells è accreditato anche ad Alan Gowen, tastierista dei National Health con i quali Bruford aveva collaborato anni prima. Forever until Sunday e The Sahara of Snow (part 2) provengono dal repertorio concertistico di UK, il gruppo che Bruford e Allan Holdsworth avevano fondato nel 1978 assieme a John Wetton e Eddie Jobson; quest'ultimo è ospite al violino nel primo brano ed è coautore del secondo.
Pochi mesi dopo la registrazione dell'album, Holdsworth lasciò i Bruford e a partire dagli anni ottanta intraprese la carriera come solista; gli subentrò John Clark, a partire dalla tournée americana legata a quest'album (luglio 1979).

One of a Kind is the second solo album by the drummer Bill Bruford, and the first proper album by his band Bruford. Released in 1979 on EG Records, it is a collection of instrumentals in a style that can loosely be defined as jazz fusion. Bruford features guitarist Allan Holdsworth, bassist Jeff Berlin, and keyboardist Dave Stewart. "Forever Until Sunday" and "The Sahara of Snow" had originally been performed at 1978 concerts by Bruford and Holdsworth’s previous band U.K. They were intended for a studio album, but were never properly recorded by U.K. as Bruford kept the pieces for himself when he and Holdsworth exited the band. U.K. bandmate Eddie Jobson co-wrote "The Sahara of Snow" and reprises his violin part on "Forever Until Sunday". Stewart's "Hell's Bells" utilizes a fragment penned by his former National Health colleague Alan Gowen (the 3-chord pattern underlying the guitar solo).
