I testi delle varie canzoni richiamano sempre i temi degli angeli e dei demoni; dell'inferno e del paradiso; di una lotta tra bene e male. Tale filosofia dell'album è anche dovuta alla particolare situazione del compositore "storico" dei Depeche Mode, Martin Lee Gore, in via di separazione dalla consorte.

David Gahan si è cimentato per la prima volta nella stesura dei testi per i Depeche Mode,[20] coadiuvato dal batterista Christian Eigner e dal produttore Andrew Phillpott: Suffer well, I want it all e Nothing's impossible sono sue creazioni, mentre tutte le altre tracce sono state scritte da Martin Lee Gore.

Suffer well è stata ri-adattata e ricantata per il gioco della EA The Sims 2 in Simlish, la lingua parlata dai personaggi del gioco.

Il titolo dell'album (Playing the angel, appunto) è una frase ascoltabile nell'ultima canzone, The darkest star. La parola angel compare in altre tre canzoni: John the revelator, Suffer well e Precious.

Fino a poco prima dell'uscita del disco, il titolo della sesta canzone, "Macro", era "Macrovision". Probabilmente la modifica è stata necessaria perché Macrovision è un marchio registrato (si tratta di un sistema per la protezione dei diritti d'autore nelle videocassette e nei DVD).

Il mastering dell'album è stato creato seguendo i criteri della loudness war, sacrificandone la gamma dinamica per aumentare il volume medio complessivo ai massimi livelli.[21]

Tour promozionale

Playing the Angel (deutsch: Den Engel spielen) ist das elfte Studioalbum von Depeche Mode. Erstmals in der Geschichte der Band schafften es mit Suffer Well, I Want It All und Nothing’s Impossible drei von Dave Gahan geschriebene Lieder auf das Album. Der Name des Albums stammt aus dem Song The Darkest Star. Dort heißt es in der ersten Strophe: „Oh you sad one / Playing the Angel / Isn’t so easy where you’re from“.
