Si è trattato del primo singolo pubblicato dal gruppo con lo pseudonimo Technotronic; nel 1988, infatti, il complesso aveva pubblicato un precedente singolo, intitolato Technotronic, accreditato però a The Pro 24s.

Questo brano, inciso in collaborazione con la cantante Felly e scritto da Manuela Kamosi e Thomas De Quincey, che ne ha anche curato la promozione, si è rivelato un successo internazionale scalando le classifiche dei paesi europei e degli Stati Uniti.

Il singolo, che si basava sul pezzo strumentale Technotronic pubblicato in precedenza dal gruppo, che non conteneva parti vocali, ha anticipato l'uscita del primo disco del gruppo intitolato anch'esso Pump Up the Jam. È stato uno dei più grandi successi da discoteca di quegli anni ed è stato inserito in innumerevoli raccolte di musica dance.[4] Il gruppo stesso, nel corso della propria carriera, ha inciso diverse nuove versioni di questo brano che ha permesso loro di raggiungere una grande notorietà.

La versione strumentale può essere udita durante la scena degli spogliatoi del pre-partita nel film Space Jam.

Pump Up the Jam ist ein Song des belgischen House-Projekts Technotronic. Er erschien im August 1989 als Singleauskopplung aus dem Album Pump Up the Jam: The Album.

"Pump Up the Jam" is the opening track on Belgian act Technotronic's first album, Pump Up the Jam: The Album (1989). It was released as a single on 18 August 1989[4] and was a worldwide hit, reaching number two in the United Kingdom in 1989 and on the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1990. But it did top the US Cash Box Top 100. The song was later certified triple platinum. It also peaked at number-one in Belgium, Finland, Iceland, Portugal and Spain. "Pump Up the Jam" has been described as a fusion of hip hop and deep house elements,[5] as an early example of the hip house genre,[2] and it has been named as the first house song to become a hit in the US.[1]
