Il brano è stato scritto da Mark Morrison che ne ha curato anche la produzione insieme a Phill Chill. Per la sua composizione sono stati utilizzati diversi campionamenti: la sezione ritmica è stata presa dai brani Genius of Love dei Tom Tom Club e Rocket in the Pocket di Cerrone, mentre il principale giro musicale è stato campionato da Games di Chuckii Booker; gli effetti elettronici presenti nel ritornello provengono da UFO degli ESG e sono infine presenti dei sample vocali di Feel the Heartbeat dei The Treacherous Three, The Humpty Dance dei Digital Underground e Peter Piper dei Run-DMC.[2]

Il singolo ha riscosso un notevole successo in tutti i paesi in cui è stato pubblicato, diventando la canzone di maggior successo di Morrison. È stata inserita nell'album di debutto del cantante, l'omonimo Return of the Mack, pubblicato anche questo nel 1996.

"Return of the Mack" is a song written and recorded by British R&B singer Mark Morrison, released as the third single from his debut album by the same name (1996). It topped the UK Singles Chart a month after its release, then became a European and Australian hit. In the United States, it reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and went platinum.[2] The accompanying music video was released in the United Kingdom in March 1996 and in the United States in February 1997.
