Il brano
Nel brano sono presenti sfumature hip hop simili a quelle dei brani della Sugarhill Gang e dei Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five[2]. Il rap era ancora un nuovo genere musicale a quel tempo e, specialmente Mick Jones, fu molto colpito da esso. Il brano fu registrato durante l'aprile del 1980 presso gli Electric Lady Studios di New York, sviluppato su un giro di basso suonato da Norman Watt-Roy, dei Blockheads. The Magnificent Seven rappresenta il primo tentativo di scrivere un brano rap con un testo politico-sociale da parte di una rock band. È anche il primo singolo rap eseguito da un gruppo bianco, anticipando la registrazione di Rapture, canzone dei Blondie, di sei mesi.

Il singolo fu ristampato nel 1981 con Stop the World come "B-side".
Testo e significato
Tematicamente, il testo di The Magnificent Seven potrebbe riferirsi ad un'altra canzone dei Clash, Career Opportunities, in quanto il lavoro è il punto di riferimento principale. A differenza di Career Opportunities, il testo tratta anche di altri temi, tra cui il consumismo, i media e i personaggi storici, nel brano affrontati con esuberanza e umorismo. I primi versi di The Magnificent Seven narrano di un lavoratore: egli si sveglia e va a lavorare, non per il proprio interesse, ma per acquistare oggetti alla sua ragazza:
- Working for a rise to better my station / Take my baby to sophistication / She's seen the ads, she thinks it's nice / Better work hard, I seen the price
Infine, il brano "prende" alcuni personaggi storici, tra cui Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Richard Nixon e Socrate, e li "colloca" nell'America moderna.
The Magnificent Dance
The Magnificent Dance, pubblicato il 12 aprile 1981 dalla CBS su 12 pollici[1], è un remix dance di The Magnificent Seven. Il maxi singolo fu pubblicato in Gran Bretagna con la versione estesa di The Magnificent Seven come "A-side", mentre negli Stati Uniti con la versione estesa di The Cool Out (remix di The Call Up)[1]. Il singolo è accreditato a "Pepe Unidos", pseudonimo di Strummer, Paul Simonon e Bernie Rhodes (il manager del gruppo).
