Grand Declaration of War довольно далеко отошёл от традиционного блэка в звучании, и содержит элементы авангардного метала. Альбом вышел 16 мая 2000 года на лейбле Necropolis Records. Лирика альбома, как собственно и его название подверглись влиянию великого немецкого философа Фридриха Ницше. Строки из его произведений «Сумерки идолов» и «Антихрист. Проклятие христианству» очень часто фигурируют в текстах к альбому. Название альбома взято из той же книги «Сумерки идолов», сам Ницше называл её «Великая Декларация Войны» (нем. «eine grosse Kriegserklärung»)

Grand Declaration of War is the second full-length studio album by the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem, released by Season of Mist and Necropolis Records on 6 June 2000.[3] A re-release of the album came out in December 2018, with Jaime Gomez Arellano overseeing the production.[4]
