Cacophony was an American heavy metal band formed in 1986 by guitarists Marty Friedman and Jason Becker,[1] and signed to Shrapnel Records.[2] They released two studio albums and remained active until 1989, after which both guitarists forged their own solo careers and joined other bands.

The two albums released by Cacophony, Speed Metal Symphony (1987) and Go Off! (1988),[1] were showpieces of the kind of highly technical playing typical of the 1980s shred era, with songs featuring fast tempos, melodic solos, exotic neoclassical scales and dual guitar harmonizations. Several of the tracks were entirely instrumental,[1] which prominently demonstrated Friedman and Becker's renowned technical skills.[3] In a 2009 article by Guitar World magazine, Speed Metal Symphony was ranked ninth in a list of all-time top ten shred albums.[4]

Both Friedman and Becker released their own solo albums—Dragon's Kiss and Perpetual Burn, respectively—in 1988, before the release of Go Off! Friedman later joined the thrash metal band Megadeth in 1990,[1] remaining with them for nine years as well as releasing several more solo albums, while Becker enjoyed a short stint in David Lee Roth's solo band from 1989 to 1991.[1] Becker's time with Roth was abruptly cut short due to an onset of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative disease that rendered him completely unable to play and, soon afterwards, move or speak.

Cacophony fue una banda estadounidense de corta vida, originaria de San Francisco. Estuvo vigente entre 1986 y 1989 y presentaba influencias de un estilo speed metal dominado por un extremo virtuosismo en las guitarras, combinando solos basados en escalas exóticas. La banda estuvo liderada por Jason Becker, uno de los guitarristas más virtuosos dentro del heavy metal, más específicamente el metal neoclásico, y por Marty Friedman,en ese tiempo virtuoso exguitarrista de Hawái. Hay que decir que si bien esta banda se mantuvo en un círculo "underground", esta marcó la pauta y el ocaso de la última época del heavy metal a finales de la década de los 80' junto con el estilo al cual aportaron indudablemente, el technical metal. Esta banda no continuó componiendo debido a una temprana enfermedad de uno de sus importantes integrantes, Jason Becker, el cual contrajo esclerosis lateral amiotrófica (ALS, el mal de Lou Gehrig), un mal que lo afecta paralizándole e impidiéndole progresivamente el uso de su aparato motor, lo que llevó definitivamente a un brusco término de tan importante y prometedora banda.

«Cacophony» (рус. «Какофония») — американская хеви-метал группа, образованная в 1986 году двумя гитаристами-виртуозами Марти Фридменом (Deuce, Vixen, Hawaii, Megadeth) и Джейсоном Бекером (David Lee Roth). Группа отличалась высоким техническим исполнением с элементами неоклассического и спид-металла, также двумя соло-лидер шред-гитаристами. Группа распалась в 1989 году в связи с тем, что рекорд-лейбл Shrapnel не был в состоянии достойно обеспечивать концертную поддержку группы. Фридман вскоре стал соло-гитаристом трэш-группы Megadeth, Беккер заменил Стива Вая в группе Дэвида Ли Рота.
