Guided by Voices (abgekürzt GbV) ist eine US-amerikanische Rockband um Robert Pollard, die 1983 in Dayton, Ohio, gegründet wurde. Pollard, Sänger und Kopf der Band, gilt als einer der produktivsten Songwriter der Gegenwart. Seinen Schätzungen zufolge schrieb er bis dato zwischen 3000 und 4000 Songs, die er unter dem Namen Guided By Voices, als Solo Künstler oder anderen Bandnamen veröffentlichte.[1] Die prominenteste Besetzung der Band bestand aus Pollard (Leadgesang), seinem Bruder Jim (Gitarre, Bass), Mitch Mitchell (Leadgitarren), Tobin Sprout (Gesang, Rhythmusgitarren), Kevin Fennell (Schlagzeug) und Bassist Greg Demos. Guided by Voices erlangten Mitte der Neunziger Jahre mit ihren auf Kompaktkassetten produzierten Homerecording Aufnahmen große Popularität.[2] Die Alben Bee Thousand und Alien Lanes gelten als Meilensteine des Indie-Rock und wurden von der Musikpresse gefeiert.[3] Stilistisch ist GbV von British Invasion Bands, Psychedelic Rock, Progressive Rock, Punk-Rock und Post-Punk beeinflusst.[4] GbV, bekannt für stundenlange Live-Konzerte und Pollards Songwriting-Talent, erarbeitete sich im Laufe der Jahrzehnte den Ruf einer Kultband.[5][6] Nach zahlreichen Umbesetzungen und zwei Auflösungen ist die Band nach der Rückkehr des langjährigen Gitarristen Doug Gillard bis heute aktiv und veröffentlichte seit 2017 dreizehn Alben.[7][8]

Noted at first for its lo-fi aesthetic and Portastudio four-tracks-to-cassette production methods, Guided by Voices' music was influenced by early post–British Invasion garage rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, punk rock and post-punk. The band has had a prolific output, releasing 35 full-length albums along with many other releases, and has garnered a dedicated cult following. Their songs are known for their frequent brevity and for ending abruptly or intertwining with eclectic and homemade sound effects.
