The Flowers of Romance est un groupe de punk rock britannique, originaire d'Angleterre. Actif entre 1976 et 1977, il compte plusieurs musiciens devenus connus par la suite : Sid Vicious, futur membre des Sex Pistols, Keith Levene, futur membre de The Clash, et Viv Albertine et Palmolive, futures membres des Slits.

Historique

Le groupe n'a jamais enregistré ni joué sur scène et, comme London SS et Masters of the Backside, est mieux connu pour le nombre de ses membres devenus populaires : Sid Vicious des Sex Pistols, Keith Levene — parmi les premiers membres de The Clash puis de Public Image Ltd — et Palmolive et Viv Albertine, qui jouaient au sein des Slits. Bien qu'ils n'aient jamais joué sur scène, ils sont interviewés par un fanzine nommé SKUM[1].

La chanson polémique Belsen Was a Gas s'inspire de l'un des camps de concentration durant l'Allemagne nazie, Bergen-Belsen, qui a été libéré par les troupes britanniques en 1945. Elle est ensuite reprise par les Sex Pistols, Public Image Ltd, et Sid Vicious. Aussi, Viv Albertine écrit So Tough, qui parait sur l'album Cut des Slits[2]. Le nom du groupe deviendra le titre d'une chanson des Sex Pistols et des Public Image Limited. Johnny Rotten explique en mars 1981 : « les Flowers of Romance originaux ont plus de 40 putains de membres, Keith en faisait partie et je leur ai donné ce nom[3]. »

The Flowers of Romance ist eine ehemalige Punkband der 1970er Jahre. Das einzig bemerkenswerte an diesem „Projekt“ war die Zusammenstellung der Mitglieder, die später in anderen Bands Berühmtheit erlangten, so z. B. Sid Vicious von den Sex Pistols, Keith Levene von The Clash und später Public Image Ltd. und Palmolive und Viv Albertine von den Slits. Von einer Band kann man bei den Flowers of Romance kaum sprechen, da sie eigentlich nur übten und sich zerstritten, aber weder Konzerte gaben noch irgendwelche Aufnahmen machten. Die Band existierte vom Sommer 1976 bis ins Frühjahr 1977.

The Flowers of Romance was an early punk band, formed in mid-1976 by Jo Faull and Sarah Hall, girlfriends at the time of Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols.[1] The band did not release any recordings and, like London SS and Masters of the Backside, are more famed for the number of band members that later became well known, including: Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols, Keith Levene (an early member of The Clash and later of Public Image Ltd), and Palmolive and Viv Albertine of The Slits. Despite never playing live, they were interviewed by SKUM fanzine in which Sid Vicious proclaimed "I'll just be the yob that I am now".[1][2]

La band non arrivò mai a suonare dal vivo in concerto o a pubblicare singoli e album discografici, ma nonostante questo, come i London SS e i Masters of the Backside, il nome del gruppo è rimasto celebre per la quantità di suoi membri che poi sarebbero confluiti in altri gruppi rock famosi; la formazione includeva infatti: Sid Vicious dei Sex Pistols, Keith Levene (prima nei The Clash e poi nei Public Image Ltd), Palmolive e Viv Albertine, poi nelle The Slits. Anche se non suonò mai in pubblico, la band venne intervistata dalla fanzine SCUM, e nel corso dell'intervista Sid Vicious proclamò: «Mi limiterò a essere il teppista che sono ora».[1]
