Biografia

Nato e cresciuto nel New Jersey, nel 1976, durante il periodo delle scuole superiori, incontrò Rat Skates, già divenuto un notevole batterista. I due strinsero subito un gran rapporto di amicizia, reso ancor più profondo grazie ai loro gusti musicali in comune, soprattutto verso band hard rock e punk rock come Kiss, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath e Ramones. Così, nel 1979, decisero di fondare una cover band punk rock denominata The Lubricunts, pubblicando annunci in cerca di un cantante. Agli annunci rispose Bobby Ellsworth che, portando con sé il chitarrista Rob Pisarek, si unì alla band di Verni. Ellsworth suggerì vari nomi per il nuovo gruppo, tra cui quello di "Virgin Killer", ma in definitiva venne scelto Overkill come tributo all'omonimo album dei Motörhead.

Overkill

Nel 1981, dopo l'abbandono da parte di Pisarek, la band decise di procedere con una formazione a due chitarristi, e reclutò Dan Spitz (che entrerà poi negli Anthrax) e Anthony Ammendolo, che tuttavia lasciarono il gruppo dopo poco tempo, venendo sostituiti da Rich Conte e Mike Sherry, e cominciarono a suonare cover di formazioni heavy metal come Judas Priest, Motörhead e Riot. Durante la nuova scaletta la band continuò egualmente a suonare brani punk rock, ma con più velocità, distorsione e volume, marchiando gli Overkill come una delle prime band thrash metal. Di conseguenza, Verni, insieme al resto della band, iniziò a produrre brani inediti, tra cui Grave Robbers (successivamente denominato Raise The Dead), Overkill e Unleash The Beast. Questa decisione portò la band ad un rapido successo, grazie anche ad altri album di grande importanza come Horrorscope, del quale Verni ne fu il principale autore di tutti i brani, compreso gli album successivi.[1]

The Bronx Casket Company

Nel 1998, parallelamente agli Overkill, Verni decide di fondare un altro gruppo denominato The Bronx Casket Company, caratterizzato da una sonorità più vicina al gothic metal. Ponendosi come voce del gruppo, inizia a scrivere e a produrre diversi album come l'omonimo The Bronx Casket Company e Sweet Home Transylvania, inserendo subito la band all'interno della scena thrash/gothic metal newyorkese.

Nei primi anni della carriera, Verni era solito utilizzare il proprio sound orientato soprattutto verso il punk; ma in seguito, una volta fondati gli Overkill, ha impresso un suono più veloce e distorto, rendendolo riconoscibile secondo il suo stile. È infatti considerato uno dei suoni di basso che al meglio definisce il genere thrash metal.

Carlo "D.D." Verni (born April 12, 1961) is an American musician, songwriter, and producer, best known as a founding member, bassist and songwriter of the thrash metal band Overkill. He and vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth are the only two original members who have remained with the band throughout its entire history. In addition to his work with Overkill, Verni has recorded four albums with his side project the Bronx Casket Co. and released several solo projects. He is also the composer of The Bronx Casket Co.... A New Musical.[1]
