Pianista dalla esecuzione fluida e limpida, fu anche un eccellente vibrafonista.

Biografia

Dopo gli studi musicali (solo di pianoforte in quanto imparò il vibrafono da autodidatta), la sua carriera professionale iniziò nel 1948 nel gruppo del violinista Joe Venuti.

Militò in vari gruppi (ad esempio in quelli dei chitarristi Tal Farlow e Sal Salvador) per poi intraprendere una carriera in proprio, dal 1956, ma contemporaneamente affiancata dalla attività di sideman in sala di registrazione.

Nel 1957 vinse un concorso indetto dalla rivista musicale Down Beat come miglior pianista e vibrafonista dell'anno.

Negli anni 1958 e 1959 fece parte dell'orchestra di Woody Herman, registrando per proprio conto e per altri jazzisti (Bill Evans, Bob Brookmeyer, Coleman Hawkins, Shelly Manne, Curtis Fuller solo per citarne alcuni).

Morì ancora nel pieno della sua carriera per un incidente stradale a New York[1].

Edwin James Costa (August 14, 1930 – July 28, 1962) was an American jazz pianist, vibraphonist, composer and arranger. In 1957, he was chosen as DownBeat jazz critics' new star on piano and vibes – the first time that one artist won two categories in the same year. He became known for his percussive, driving piano style that concentrated on the lower octaves of the keyboard.
