Biografia

Allievo del contrabbassista David Izenzon, dopo il servizio militare in Germania iniziò a suonare con Barney Kessel, Bud Shank, Paul Bley e Art Pepper. Fu membro di varie formazioni tra cui il Bill Evans trio (con Paul Motian alla batteria) e l'Albert Ayler Trio (con Sunny Murray alla batteria). Per un breve periodo suonò con Miles Davis, sostituendo Ron Carter in alcuni live.

Negli anni sessanta Peacock si trasferì in Giappone e abbandonò temporaneamente la musica per studiare la filosofia zen. Tornato negli Stati Uniti studiò prima biologia e poi teoria musicale alla Cornish College of the Arts.

Dal 1983 fece parte dello Standards Trio di Keith Jarrett con Jack DeJohnette alla batteria. Il trio, considerato una delle più importanti formazioni di questo tipo nella storia del jazz, suonò in molti concerti in tutto il mondo.

Fu sposato con la musicista Annette Peacock.

Gary George Peacock (May 12, 1935 – September 4, 2020)[2] was an American jazz double bassist.[3] He recorded a dozen albums under his own name,[4] and also performed and recorded with major jazz figures such as avant garde saxophonist Albert Ayler, pianists Bill Evans, Paul Bley and Marilyn Crispell, and as a part of Keith Jarrett’s “Standards Trio” with drummer Jack DeJohnette.[5] The trio existed for over thirty years, and recorded over twenty albums together.[6] DeJohnette once stated that he admired Peacock's "sound, choice of notes, and, above all, the buoyancy of his playing."[7] Marilyn Crispell called Peacock a "sensitive musician with a great harmonic sense."[7]
