Победитель премии Грэмми, он был одним из наиболее востребованных сессионных барабанщиков в конце 1960-х, 1970-х годах, делая записи альбомов со многими известными музыкантами того времени[2], в частности был барабанщиком блюз-роковой супергруппы Derek & The Dominos.

Прогрессирующая шизофрения вынудила Гордона в начале 1980-х оставить музыку. А в 1983 году случилась трагедия: он убил свою мать и после этого был приговорён к пожизненному лишению свободы с правом условно-досрочного освобождения через 16 лет. С 1999 года ему несколько раз отказывали в условно-досрочном освобождении, последний раз в марте 2018 года, следующее прошение он может подать не ранее марта 2021 года.
