Docente scolastico a inizio carriera, è stato a metà degli anni settanta una star del celebre programma televisivo Top of the Pops.
Uno dei brani per i quali è maggiormente conosciuto è la sua cover del celebre standard Streets of London.
Gode di notorietà particolarmente sul mercato musicale della Germania, paese nel quale ha suonato spesso durante diverse tournée.
Biografia
Whittaker è un artista conosciuto in tutto il mondo ed ha venduto dischi per oltre 55 milioni di copie. Il suo genere musicale rientra nel cosiddetto easy listening. È conosciuto per il caratteristico timbro di voce nel registro di baritono e per la particolare abilità nel produrre musica attraverso la tecnica del fischio.
I suoi genitori - Edward e Viola - erano originari dello Staffordshire, inghilterra, dove gestivano una drogheria. In conseguenza di un incidente di motocicletta occorso al padre di Roger, bisognoso di cure e di un clima mite, la famiglia si trasferì in una fattoria del Kenya. Il nonno di Roger, anch'egli cantante, si esibiva in vari club mentre il padre del futuro cantante suonava il violino. Fu in quel periodo che il ragazzo incominciò a imparare a suonare la chitarra acustica.
Nel 1954 Whittaker venne arruolato nel reggimento del Kenya dove rimase per due anni. Nel 1956, al momento di essere congedato, decise di studiare da medico e si iscrisse all'Università di Città del Capo, in Sudafrica. Lasciò tuttavia gli studi un anno e mezzo dopo per diventare insegnante per il servizio civile del suo paese.
Carriera
Con l'intento di riprendere l'università, Whittaker si trasferì in Gran Bretagna nel settembre del 1959. Nei successivi tre anni studiò zoologia, biochimica e biologia marina all'Università del Galles, a Bangor ottenendo un B.A. in scienze. Contestualmente continuò a cantare in club locali incidendo anche alcune canzoni per i dischi in acetato (flexi-discs) che venivano distribuiti abbinati al foglio universitario edito dagli studenti del campus.
Successivamente passò a incidere per la Fontana Records, l'etichetta discografica che distribuì nel 1962 il suo primo singolo inciso come professionista: The Charge of The Light Brigade. Nella stessa estate del 1962, Whittaker prese parte ad un concorso internazionale di musica a Portrush, nell'Irlanda del Nord. Il successo gli venne subito con la scrittura ottenuta con la Ulster Television per uno spettacolo intitolato This And That (Questo e Quello).
Il suo secondo singolo, ed il primo a scalare le classifiche della UK Top 30 (NME) fu una cover da Jimmy Dean, Steel Men, distribuito anch'esso nel giugno 1962.
Il successo
Nel 1968, la carriera di Whittaker ebbe un impulso con un cambio di etichetta che lo portò a incidere nell'autunno del 1969 per la EMI Records Durham Town (The Leavin') che fu il primo singolo del cantante a piazzarsi nella Top 20 britannica. Nella primavera dell'anno successivo, la RCA Victor distribuì poi New World In The Morning sul mercato USA (anche in questo casò il brano entrò nella Top 20 delle classifiche di brani easy listening.
È il 1975 quando Whittaker incide il suo primo singolo dal successo globale, The Last Farewell, che avrebbe venduto in totale undici milioni di copie in tutto il mondo. Un'incursione del cantante nel genere country music lo indusse a registrare I Love You Because che entrò nelle chart del genere nel tardo 1983.
Nel 1979, Whittaker aveva scritto per l'Eurovision Song Contest le canzoni Call My Name - che vinse la finale delle selezioni del Regno Unito - e A Song For Europe, poi cantata da Eleanor Keenan, che si piazzò terza. Lo stesso Whittaker incise poi la canzone che entrò nelle classifiche dei singoli di diverse nazioni europee.
Vita privata
Nella primavera del 1964 Roger si fidanzò con Natalie O'Brien e i due convolarono a nozze il 15 agosto dello stesso anno. Dalla loro unione sono nati cinque figli: Emily (nata il 28 maggio 1968), Lauren (4 giugno 1970), Jessica (14 febbraio 1973), Guy (15 novembre 1974) e Alexander (7 aprile 1978). La coppia ha nove nipoti.
