Giovanni Battista Sammartini (* 1700 oder 1701 in Mailand; † 15. Januar 1775 ebenda) war zu Lebzeiten der maßgebliche Komponist seiner Heimatstadt. Sein Bruder Giuseppe Sammartini war ebenfalls Komponist und hauptsächlich in London tätig.

Leben

Giovanni Battista Sammartini war Kapellmeister an Sant’Ambrogio und einer weiteren Kirche in Mailand und beeinflusste mit seinem Stil Christoph Willibald Gluck, den er 1736 bis 1741 unterrichtete. Andere Schüler waren Christian Cannabich (1754) und Josef Mysliveček (1770er Jahre).[1] Gegen Ende seines Lebens, in den Jahren 1770 und 1771, erlebte er die Auftritte Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts in Mailand auf dessen erster Italienreise bei dessen Versuch, in Mailand eine dauerhafte Anstellung zu finden. Mit weiteren zeitgenössischen Komponisten, darunter Johann Christian Bach und Luigi Boccherini, pflegte er persönlichen Kontakt.

Werke

Sammartini schrieb mehr als 70 Sinfonien und war nicht nur quantitativ einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der frühen Form dieser Musikgattung. Er gehörte auch zu den ersten Komponisten, die Streichquartette und -quintette (ohne Continuobegleitung) komponierten, und hatte in diesem Genre vermutlich einen gewissen Einfluss auf Boccherini und auf den jungen Mozart.[2] Darüber hinaus verfasste er drei Opern, Concerti grossi, Kirchenmusik, Kantaten, Kammermusik und Sonaten für Cembalo.

Giovanni Battista Sammartini (c. 1700 – 15 January 1775) was an Italian composer, violinist, organist, choirmaster and teacher. He counted Gluck among his students, and was highly regarded by younger composers including Johann Christian Bach. It has also been noted that many stylizations in Joseph Haydn's compositions are similar to those of Sammartini, although Haydn denied any such influence.[2] Sammartini is especially associated with the formation of the concert symphony through both the shift from a brief opera-overture style and the introduction of a new seriousness and use of thematic development that prefigure Haydn and Mozart. Some of his works are described as galant, a style associated with Enlightenment ideals, while "the prevailing impression left by Sammartini's work... [is that] he contributed greatly to the development of a Classical style that achieved its moment of greatest clarity precisely when his long, active life was approaching its end".[1]
