Geschichte

Erotica wurde von Madonna und Shep Pettibone geschrieben.[2] Es gibt drei verschiedene Versionen: die Demo-Version, die Album-Version und die Version Erotic, die dem Buch SEX von 1992 beilag. Pettibones Idee war es, Textzeilen aus dem Buch in dieser Version des Songs zu verwenden. Die Album-Version enthält ein Sample des 1974er-Hits Jungle Boogie von Kool & the Gang.

Bei der Veröffentlichung gab es erneut eine Kontroverse um den sexuellen Inhalt des Liedes, ähnlich wie bei Justify My Love. Der Vatikan verbot Madonna die Einreise und verbannte ihre Musik aus dem Radio.[3]

Erfolg

Erotica war seit 1983 die erste Leadsingle aus einem Madonna-Album, die nicht Platz eins der Billboard Hot 100 erreichte. Sie erreichte Platz drei der US-Charts,[4] Platz drei in Großbritannien und Platz 13 in Deutschland. Das Lied wurde im Rahmen von Madonna's World-Tour The Girlie Show 1993 als erstes und auf Madonnas Confessions Tour sowie im Film Filth and Wisdom, bei dem sie Regie führte, verwendet.

"Erotica" is a song by American singer Madonna from her fifth studio album of the same (1992). It was written and produced by both Madonna and Shep Pettibone, with additional writing from Anthony Shimkin. In Australia and most European countries, the song was released as the album's lead single on September 29, 1992; in the United States, it was set to be released the following day, but after it was leaked and played on several radio stations, the release date was held back until October 13. It was then included on Madonna's compilations, GHV2 (2001), and Celebration (2009). "Erotica" continued Madonna's exploration of spoken word vocals, which she had introduced in "Justify My Love" (1990). A pop hip-hop dance song with Middle Eastern influences, its lyrics talk about S&M, with the singer using the pseudonym Dita and inviting her lover to be submissive while she makes love to him.
