Introspective ist das dritte Studioalbum der Pet Shop Boys. Es erschien im Oktober 1988 und gilt als das am zweithäufigsten verkaufte Album der Band. Es erreichte in Deutschland Platz 3 und in Großbritannien Platz 2 der Charts.[1][2]

Geschichte

Auf Introspective veröffentlichten die Pet Shop Boys im Gegensatz zu den Vorgängeralben recht lange Stücke mit einer Länge von sechs bis neun Minuten. Die Singleveröffentlichungen zu dem Album waren jedoch kürzere und radiofreundlichere Abmischungen der Songs. Nur zwei Stücke wurden unmittelbar für das Album geschrieben: Left to My Own Devices und Domino Dancing. Always on My Mind und It’s Alright sind Coverversionen, I Want a Dog erschien bereits als B-Seite der Single Rent, I’m Not Scared ist die eigene Version der Pet Shop Boys eines Liedes, das sie für Patsy Kensits Popband Eighth Wonder geschrieben hatten. Auf dem Album arbeiteten Tennant und Lowe mit gerade in Mode befindlichen stilistischen Mitteln; so verwendeten sie Latin- und House-Anleihen.[3]

Rezeption

Stephen Thomas Erlewine schrieb in seiner Vier-Sterne-Kritik bei Allmusic: „Nevertheless, the mixes are more compelling than the remixes on Disco, and the songs include several of their best numbers...“[3]

Vier der sechs Stücke des Albums wurden von Neil Tennant und Chris Lowe geschrieben. Always on My Mind wurde von Johnny Christopher, Mark James und Wayne Carson Thompson geschrieben, It's alright von dem amerikanischen House-DJ Sterling Void.
