Woman Is the Nigger of the World ist ein Stück, das von John Lennon und Yoko Ono geschrieben und im September 1972 auf dem Album Some Time in New York City und zuvor am 12. Mai 1972[1] als Single veröffentlicht wurde. Zuvor war es bereits gemeinsam mit Sisters, O Sisters als Single erschienen. Lennon selbst bezeichnete es als „ersten Song der Frauenbewegung“.[2]

Bedeutung und Entstehung

Der Titel des Stücks geht auf ein Interview mit Yoko Ono aus dem Jahr 1968 zurück, das sie dem britischen Frauenmagazin Nova gab. Lennon nutzte diese provokante These Onos um seine zunehmend feministischen Ansichten der Öffentlichkeit zu präsentieren. Sein Text handelt von der Unterdrückung der Frau in einer männlich dominierten Gesellschaft. Nach Lennons Angaben hat ihn der irische Revolutionär James Connolly und dessen Aussage „der weibliche Arbeiter ist der Sklave des Sklaven“ inspiriert.[3][4]

Im März 1972 nahm er das Stück gemeinsam mit der New Yorker Gruppe Elephant’s Memory auf, deren Saxophonist Stan Bronstein die Aufnahme mitprägte.[5] Produziert wurde das Lied von Phil Spector.

Wirkung und Kritik

Nach der Premiere des Stücks live in Dick Cavetts amerikanischer Fernsehshow wurde es besonders wegen der Verwendung des Schimpfworts „Nigger“ im Titel kritisiert. Verschiedene Radiosender boykottierten die Ausstrahlung des Lieds.
