Con i suoi sei minuti After Hours rappresenta il brano più lungo dell'album e, rispetto ai precedenti Heartless e Blinding Lights, si caratterizza per le sonorità maggiormente elettroniche ed oscure, con rimiche ispirate alla musica elettronica e all'house;[1] la critica specializzata ha paragonato tali sonorità a quelle che hanno contraddistinto i primi tre mixtape pubblicati da The Weeknd nel 2011, House of Balloons, Thursday e Echoes of Silence.[1][10]

Il testo, invece, tratta il desiderio dell'artista di poter ritornare con una propria ex (nel suo caso Bella Hadid), rivelando di essere lui stesso la causa della rottura nella seconda parte del brano.[11]

Il 18 febbraio 2020 il brano è stato annunciato dall'artista in occasione della diffusione del trailer relativo all'album omonimo, venendo reso disponibile per l'ascolto il giorno seguente.[12]

"After Hours" is a song by Canadian singer the Weeknd.[1] It was released by XO and Republic Records as the first promotional single from his fourth studio album of the same name on February 19, 2020.[2] The Weeknd wrote and produced the song with its producers Illangelo, DaHeala and Mario Winans, with Belly receiving additional writing credits.[3] Snippets of the song were included on the parent album's self titled short film.[4] A remix of the song by the Blaze was released alongside the deluxe edition of its parent album on March 23, 2020.[5]
