Crying in the Chapel è un brano musicale gospel scritto da Artie Glenn per il figlio Darrell, ed originariamente registrata nel 1953, da Artie insieme alla sua band The Rhythm Riders. Il 31 ottobre 1960,[4] Elvis Presley incise una versione di Crying in the Chapel con l'idea di inserirla nel suo album gospel His Hand in Mine. Furono registrate tre take del pezzo, ma Elvis non rimase soddisfatto.[5][6] Alla fine si decise di buttare via tutto e ricominciare daccapo. La versione finale non fu inclusa nell'album His Hand in Mine, ma bensì nel secondo album gospel di Presley, How Great Thou Art (1967).
Il 6 aprile 1965, Crying In the Chapel venne pubblicata su singolo dalla RCA nella serie "Gold Standard Series."[7] Il 45 giri si rivelò essere il primo singolo di Elvis a superare il milione di copie vendute fin dai tempi di Return to Sender nel 1962.[8] Crying in the Chapel arrivò in terza posizione nella classifica Billboard Hot 100 e rimase in vetta alla Easy Listening Chart per sette settimane di fila.[9]
La versione di Presley fu un grande successo anche in Gran Bretagna dove arrivò al primo posto in classifica.[10]

Oltre a Presley, più di 50 altri artisti hanno reinterpretato Crying in the Chapel nel corso degli anni.[11] Tra i nomi più noti citiamo Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Marley (con il testo modificato in favore di Hailé Selassié), Platters, Johnny Burnette e Little Richard.
Nel 1965 Bobby Solo ne incise una versione in lingua italiana (con testo di Franco Migliacci) dal titolo: La casa del Signore.

"Crying in the Chapel" is a song written by Artie Glenn for his son Darrell to sing. According to Cliff Glenn, Artie Glenn's oldest grandson, Artie had written the song in 1951 but left it in a drawer for two years, until Darrell recorded it while still in high school in 1953,[2] along with Artie's band the Rhythm Riders. The song was rejected by Hill and Range Songs and Acuff-Rose Music. The song was eventually published by Valley Publishers which also released the single featuring Darrell Glenn. It became a local hit and then it went nationwide. The original version of the song (Valley V-11) was issued in June 1953.[3][4] Darrell Glenn's original recording reached number one on the Cash Box chart (where all versions were amalgamated) and number six on Billboard. Glenn's version also hit number six on the Billboard pop singles chart and number four on the Billboard country and western chart, Rex Allen's number eight, The Orioles' number 11, Ella Fitzgerald number 15, and Art Lund reached number 23.[5] Lee Lawrence took his version to number 7 in the United Kingdom.[6]- [it] Crying in the Chapel
