Fish Out of Water è il primo e unico album solista di Chris Squire, bassista degli Yes. Come Beginnings (Steve Howe), Olias of Sunhillow (Jon Anderson), Ramshackled (Alan White) e The Story of I (Patrick Moraz), l'album nacque dalla decisione degli Yes, dopo Relayer, di realizzare un album solista a testa, da promuovere nel successivo tour del gruppo. Fra questi, Olias e Fish Out of Water sono generalmente considerati quelli più vicini al messaggio musicale degli Yes.

Fish Out of Water comprende cinque brani in puro stile progressive, con strutture melodiche complesse, inusuali soluzioni ritmiche (con settimi, undicesimi e così via), arricchiti dalle armonie vocali tipiche di Squire, che qui, diversamente dagli album degli Yes, è anche lead singer.
L'album si avvale della collaborazione di altri due musicisti di provenienza "Yes" (Bill Bruford e Patrick Moraz, che suona in tutti i brani), e a tratti persino di una orchestra sinfonica. Fra gli altri musicisti notevoli, bisogna segnalare Jimmy Hastings al flauto in Silently Falling (uno dei brani di più spiccato sapore Yes) e Mel Collins (King Crimson) al sassofono in Lucky Seven, in cui Bruford e Squire duettano su ritmiche insolite in un modo che ricorda Heart of the Sunrise di Fragile.
Soprattutto notevoli sono, come ci si potrebbe aspettare, le linee di basso, che risaltano in particolare in Hold Out Your Hand, uno dei brani più celebri di quest'opera.
L'album si posizionò entro i primi trenta posti delle classifiche sia in Inghilterra che negli Stati Uniti.
Il titolo dell'album è un riferimento al nomignolo di Squire (per l'appunto "fish", "pesce") per la prima volta senza gli Yes ("fuor d'acqua").

Fish Out of Water is the debut studio album by English bassist and songwriter Chris Squire, released in November 1975 by Atlantic Records. The album was recorded during a period in which each band member of Yes had taken down time to produce a solo album. Some of the musicians Squire hired for the project were former Yes drummer Bill Bruford, then-Yes keyboardist Patrick Moraz, King Crimson saxophonist Mel Collins and Canterbury scene flautist Jimmy Hastings.
