Descrizione
Come indicato sulle note di copertina, l'album prende il titolo dall'omonimo quadro raffigurato in copertina, opera del pittore rumeno Paul Neagu.[1] Il disco fu l'unico del gruppo a vedere in studio la partecipazione del chitarrista John Clark, subentrato ad Allan Holdsworth nel 1979 e già apparso sull'album dal vivo The Bruford Tapes dello stesso anno.
Se il precedente One of a Kind era interamente strumentale, quest'album torna a includere testi su quattro delle otto tracce, cantati dal bassista Jeff Berlin. Il brano Gothic 17 ospita la violoncellista Georgina "Georgie" Born, già nei National Health assieme al tastierista Dave Stewart, nonché ex collaboratrice degli Henry Cow; sulla traccia di chiusura, Land's End, compaiono le voci di Amanda Parsons e Barbara Gaskin, anch'esse da tempo colleghe di Stewart in Egg e Hatfield and the North.[1]
Il gruppo si sciolse definitivamente nel settembre del 1980, subito dopo le tournée legate a quest'album[2] e dalla prima metà del 1981 Bill Bruford tornò a far parte dei King Crimson.[2]

Gradually Going Tornado is the third solo album by drummer Bill Bruford and second and final album by his group Bruford. It was co-produced by Bruford and Ron Malo, the latter known from his work with Weather Report. The music on the album leans closer to progressive rock than the jazz fusion oriented sound of the band’s previous albums. More of Bruford's lyrics are featured as well, for the first time sung by bassist Jeff Berlin. "Land's End" incorporates music keyboardist Dave Stewart has previously composed for the National Health album Of Queues and Cures (1978). Guitarist Allan Holdsworth does not appear, and he recommended John Clark as his replacement in the band after he had given Clark several guitar lessons. Clark was listed on the album sleeve as "the unknown John Clark" as part of a running joke related to his relative obscurity in comparison to his predecessor.- [it] Gradually Going Tornado
