Protection vede la collaborazione della cantante Tracey Thorn, uno degli artisti chiamati nell'album omonimo in sostituzione dell'acclamata Shara Nelson. Secondo AllMusic il brano è una "canzone d'amore, sottile controparte di Safe from Harm",[1] quest'ultima cantata dalla Nelson e presente nell'album di debutto della band.
Il brano contiene due sample presi da The Payback di James Brown.[2]

"Protection" is a collaboration between Massive Attack and Everything but the Girl singer Tracey Thorn that appears on Massive Attack's second studio album, Protection (1994). Released as a single on 9 January 1995, the song reached number 14 on the UK Singles Chart, staying in the chart for four weeks, and also peaked at number 27 in New Zealand.
