Certificato disco d'oro in sole due settimane[15] e disco di platino in tre mesi negli Stati Uniti d'America, l'album ha riscosso ottime vendite anche a livello mondiale, permettendo agli Slipknot le prime partecipazioni ai concerti dell'Ozzfest. Il disco riprende sia alcune tracce da un demo omonimo del 1998 che altre dall'album Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. (1996). L'album è inoltre il primo pubblicato dalla Roadrunner Records ad ottenere il disco di platino.[16]


Descrizione


Le sonorità dell'album sono influenzate principalmente dal rap metal e dal nu metal tipico dei Korn e dei Deftones, riproposti però in forma molto più aggressiva[15][17][18] e molto vicina al death metal.[19] È infatti molto presente l'influenza di gruppi appartenenti a generi di metal estremo, come gli Slayer[4] e i Sepultura.[20] Il disco si fa notare anche per l'ampio utilizzo di percussioni nei brani, per l'abilità tecnica del batterista Joey Jordison, per le forti influenze thrash metal e per gli elementi provenienti da generi di musica elettronica, come industrial e drum and bass.[21][22]

La copertina dell'album mostra i componenti del gruppo tutti in maschera e con le tute da operaio, immagine che li ha resi famosi.[4][17]

Alle registrazioni del disco partecipò in prima istanza il chitarrista Josh Brainard, che abbandonò gli Slipknot a metà delle sessioni; al suo posto subentrò Jim Root.[23]

Slipknot is the debut studio album by American heavy metal band Slipknot. It was released on June 29, 1999 by Roadrunner Records, following a demo containing a few of the songs which had previously been released in 1998.[4] Later, it was reissued in December 1999 with a slightly-altered track listing and mastering as the result of a lawsuit. It was the first release by the band to be produced by Ross Robinson, who sought to refine Slipknot's sound rather than alter the group's musical direction. This is the only album to feature original guitarist Josh Brainard who left at the end of recording in late 1998 while the band was taking a brief break. Jim Root, who recorded two tracks at this point, would appear full time on subsequent albums.
