West Coast è una ballata mid-tempo surf rock, psychedelic rock e soft rock dalla durata di quattro minuti e diciassette secondi.[1][2][3] È stata scritta dalla cantante insieme a Rick Nowels mentre la produzione è stata curata da Dan Auerbach.[7]


Pubblicazione


West Coast è stato annunciato come primo singolo dall'album Ultraviolence il 3 aprile 2014 da Lana del Rey.[8] Quest'ultima ha rivelato la cover del brano il 10 aprile dello stesso anno.[9] In seguito è stata pubblicata una seconda versione del brano, utilizzata per la trasmissione radio.


Successo commerciale


West Coast è diventata la seconda hit ad aver raggiunto la top20 nella Billboard Hot 100 della cantante (dopo Summertime Sadness Cedric Gervais Remix), avendo debuttato alla 17ª posizione.[10] Nella Hot Digital Songs, West Coast ha fatto il suo ingresso al sesto posto con una vendita pari a 118 000 download digitali.[10]

In Francia, West Coast ha venduto oltre 1 400 download digitali nella sua prima settimana dalla pubblicazione ed ha debuttato alla 34ª posizione nella classifica Syndicat national de l'édition phonographique.[11]

"West Coast" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey for her third studio album, Ultraviolence (2014). Written by Del Rey and Rick Nowels, it is a melancholy love song about a woman torn between love and ambition, and as a dedication to the West Coast of the United States. A psychedelic rock and soft rock ballad, "West Coast" was noted to be an evolution and more guitar-orientated in sound for Del Rey and was produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. Described as a two-in-one song, its shifting tempo transitions downward by nearly 60 beats per minute at the chorus, in a rhythmical shift reminiscent of the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out" (1965), introduced by the guitar lick that begins the Beatles' "And I Love Her" (1964). In the song, Del Rey's vocal comprises a more sensual and demented tone than in her previous discography, and are often sung in an anxious "breathy" style.
