Before the Flood ist ein 1974 erschienenes Livealbum von Bob Dylan und The Band. Die Aufnahmen entstanden im Rahmen der gemeinsamen Tournee im Jahr 1974 und wurden zunächst bei Asylum Records veröffentlicht.

Entstehung und Inhalt

Nach der gemeinsamen Arbeit an dem gerade veröffentlichten Dylan-Album Planet Waves traten Dylan und The Band nach acht Jahren wieder eine gemeinsame Tour quer durch die USA an. Sie umfasste 40 Konzerte im Zeitraum von Anfang Januar bis Mitte Februar 1974. Für Dylan war es die erste Tournee nach seinem Motorradunfall 1966. Die Konzerte waren innerhalb kürzester Zeit ausverkauft, wobei die Nachfrage das Kartenkontingent wohl um ein Vielfaches überstieg.

The Band fungierte bei dieser Tour nicht mehr lediglich als reine Begleitband für Dylan, sondern spielte mehrere Lieder aus ihrem eigenen Repertoire, während Dylan pausierte. Zu Beginn integrierte Dylan einige seiner neuen Songs vom Planet-Waves-Album in die Auftritte, diese verschwanden jedoch im Laufe der Tour fast vollständig aus dem Programm. Für Kritik oder zumindest Aufsehen sorgten Dylans herausschreiende, teilweise unmelodischen und bis zur Unkenntlichkeit veränderten Interpretationen seiner eigenen Lieder.

Die Aufnahmen auf Before the Flood stammen fast ausschließlich von den beiden letzten Konzerten der Tour, die am 14. Februar in Los Angeles stattfanden.

Before the Flood is a live album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan and The Band, released on June 20, 1974, on Asylum Records in the United States and Island Records in the United Kingdom. It was Dylan's first live album, although live recordings of earlier performances would later be released. It is the 15th album by Dylan and the seventh by the Band, and documents their joint 1974 American tour. It peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200,[1] reached No. 8 on the popular album chart in the UK,[2] and has been certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.[3]
