Rhythm Nation 1814 ist das vierte Studioalbum von Janet Jackson, das im September 1989 bei A&M Records erschien.

Geschichte

Janet Jackson entschied sich, ein Konzeptalbum über soziale Ungerechtigkeit zu machen. Sie arbeitete dabei unter anderem mit dem Songwriting-Team Jimmy Jam und Terry Lewis zusammen und schrieb sechs der Stücke auf dem Album selbst mit. Janet Jackson produzierte das Album selbst, wobei Labelchef John McClain "Executive Producer" war.

Das Album bewegt sich zwischen Contemporary R&B und Pop, wobei beim Gesang auch Einflüsse aus dem Hip-Hop vorhanden sind. Die Ballade Livin' in a World (They Didn't Make) beschreibt das Schicksal von Kindern, die Gewalt ausgesetzt sind.[1]

Acht Singles wurden ausgekoppelt: Miss You Much, Rhythm Nation, Escapade, Alright, Come Back to Me, Black Cat, Love Will Never Do (Without You) und State of the World.

Kritik

Die Webseite Allmusic schrieb, dass Jacksons Stimme ziemlich dünn sei, aber "Soul und Spirit" hat. Das Konzept des Albums sei erfolgreich gewesen.[1]

Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 is the fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter Janet Jackson, released on September 19, 1989, by A&M Records. Although label executives wanted material similar to her previous album, Control (1986), Jackson insisted on creating a concept album addressing social issues. Collaborating with songwriters and record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, she drew inspiration from various tragedies reported through news media, exploring racism, poverty, and substance abuse, in addition to themes of romance. Although its primary concept of a sociopolitical utopia was met with mixed reactions, its composition received critical acclaim. Jackson came to be considered a role model for youth because of her socially conscious lyrics.
