A novembre 2012, Ferguson ha dichiarato che dopo il suo tour negli Stati Uniti all'inizio del 2013, sarebbe tornata in studio per cominciare a scrivere tracce per il suo secondo album, la cui uscita era prevista nel tardo 2013 o all'inizio del 2014.[2] Nel luglio 2013, ha dichiarato attraverso una serie di messaggi su Twitter che è "orgogliosa" del suo nuovo album e che "è stato difficile da fare".[3] Ha anche rivelato di aver scritto canzoni "ispirate ai suoi bambini".[3] Il 22 agosto 2013, Ferguson ha formalmente annunciato via Twitter che il titolo del nuovo album è Freedom e sarebbe stato messo in commercio a partire dal 2 dicembre 2013 nel Regno Unito.[4]

Rebecca Ferguson considera Freedom più forte e grintoso rispetto al suo predecessore.[5]

Freedom is the second studio album by English singer-songwriter Rebecca Ferguson, and was released on 2 December 2013 in the United Kingdom, a day after the release of the album's lead single "I Hope". The album received positive reviews from critics, praising her vocals and movement away from her soul-influenced debut album, Heaven, into a more R&B, club-orientated sound. The album also attained moderate commercial success in the UK, where it became her second top ten album and achieved a silver certification from the BPI after just 3 weeks since its release date, followed by a Gold certification on 27 December 2013. The album was released through a joint deal between Syco Music and RCA Records.
