Il brano è stato scritto da Gwen Stefani e Tom Dumont, prodotto da Matthew Wilder, registrato da Phil Kaffel e George Landress e mixato da Holman e Paul Palmer.
Descrive l'esasperazione con cui venivano descritte le ragazze e in generale le figure femminili. Secondo gli autori, infatti, lo stereotipo di ragazza era rappresentato con un carattere debole e con un uomo accanto che doveva prendersi cura di loro. Inoltre l'autrice si sofferma sul fatto che i padri di queste ragazze sono spesso preoccupati al pensiero delle figlie, che si ritirano tardi e che guidano la macchina da sole per rincasare la sera.

"Just a Girl" is a song by American band No Doubt for their third studio album, Tragic Kingdom (1995). Released as the record's lead single in the United States on September 21, 1995, it was written by Gwen Stefani and Tom Dumont, and produced by Matthew Wilder. It has also made an appearance on their 2003 greatest hits album, The Singles 1992–2003. Lyrically, "Just a Girl" is about Stefani's perspective of life as a woman and her struggles with having strict parents.
