Le parole della canzone, scritte da Martin Lee Gore, ricordano la difficile situazione familiare dei suoi figli e il suo divorzio con la loro madre.

Inoltre il brano è caratterizzato da un sound elettronico perché la nota iniziale è quasi la stessa usata dal 13 gennaio 1992 al 24 agosto 2014 nel sottofondo del TG5 durante l'edizione serale (fino al 18 settembre 2005 anche prima della pausa pubblicitaria all'interno della stessa edizione, dal 27 giugno 1994 al 18 settembre 2005 prima della pausa pubblicitaria dell'edizione delle 13:00 e dal 15 settembre 1997 al 18 settembre 2005 all'interno dell'edizione notturna).

The song reached No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart, No. 71 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and No. 23 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart. It also topped the charts in Denmark, Italy, Spain, and Sweden, and it peaked within the top 10 in Austria, Wallonia, Canada, Finland, Germany, and Norway.
