    La discografía de Dream Theater consiste oficialmente en catorce álbumes de estudio, cinco álbum en directo, un álbum recopilatorio, dos EP, veintitrés sencillos, siete DVD musicales y diez clips de video. La banda fue fundada, originalmente con el nombre de Majesty, en septiembre de 1985 por el guitarrista John Petrucci, el bajista John Myung y el batería Mike Portnoy, compañeros de la universidad Berklee College of Music. Para completar la banda, añadieron al teclista Kevin Moore y al vocalista Chris Collins.[1] En noviembre de 1987, Tras editar una demo llamada Majesty Demos, Collins fue reemplazado por Charlie Dominici.[2] El grupo firmó un contrato con Mechanic Records, y editó su álbum debut, When Dream and Day Unite, en 1989. Tras la salida del álbum, la banda decidió cambiar su nombre por Dream Theater, inspirados por un teatro actualmente demolido en Monterrey, California.
