Early life

Nataša Bekvalac was born on 25 September 1980 in Novi Sad, SFR Yugoslavia. She is the daughter of the former footballer and coach, Dragoljub Bekvalac.[1] Bekvalac grew up as the middle child with two sisters.[2]

In 1989, she performed with the band Regina at the children's music festival Deca pevaju hitove.[3] Bekvalac also appeared on the popular variety show hosted by Minja Subota, called Mužički tobogan, the following year.[4]

Before pursuing a career in music, she graduated from a senior coaching school.[3]

Career

In 1998, Bekvalac performed at the Beogradsko proleće festival with "Mojoj ljubavi". Her debut album Ne brini was released in 2001 under City Records. The title song was presented a year prior at the Sunčane Skale pop music festival in Herceg Novi. Her sophomore album, titled Ništa lično, which was released in 2002, spawned one of her greatest hits - "Mali signali".[3] In December 2004, she released Stero ljubav, featuring popular songs such as "Nikotin" and "Ponovo".[3] Her EP Ljubav, vera, nada was released in November 2008.

Bekvalac released her fifth body of work, Ne valjam, in November 2010. The song "Čistija" was promoted on Serbian MTV in December, which saw a memorable altercation between Bekvalac and the show's host, actor Sergej Trifunović, caused by Trifunović's "inappropriate" introduction.[5] Between 2011 and 2014, she released several standalone singles, including: "Ja sam dobro" (2012), "Pozitivna" (2012), "Kraljica novih ljubavi", "Bolesno te volim" (2013) and "Najgora" (2014).[3] In June 2016, Bekvalac released Original, which yielded two singles: "Original" and "Pseto".[3] She made her theatre debut in October the same year, starring as Queen Draga Mašin in the musical Tajna Crne ruke.[6] In 2018, she replaced singer Jelena Tomašević as the judge on the children's singing show Pinkove zvezdice.[7] In October, Bekvalac collaborated with rapper Coby on their single "Mala plava".[8]

On the Valentine's Day 2020, she held a solo concert at the Belgrade Arena, titled S.O.S. za ljubav.[9] The live album from the concert was also released two years later. In July 2021, Bekvalac released a duet with Rasta, titled "Iz daleka".[10] In September 2022, she embarked on a six-date American tour, performing for Serbian diaspora.[11]

Personal life

Bekvalac has also received widespread media attention because of her personal life. She has been married three times and has two daughters. In 2004, she started dating Serbian waterpolo player Danilo Ikodinović.[3] They married in July 2006. The couple welcomed their daughter Hana on 17 March 2007.[12] After five years of marriage, Bekvalac divorced from Ikodinović in 2011.[13]

Between 2015 and 2017, she was married to handball player Ljubomir Jovanović.[13] Subsequently, she got married to IT entrepreneur Luka Lazukić.[13] Bekvalac gave birth to her second daughter, named Katja, on 28 February 2018.[14] On the night between 12th and 13th April, she was physically assaulted by her then husband.[15][16] In April the following year, Lazukić was charged for domestic assault and was sentenced to 8 months of prison.[17] Bekvalac filled for a divorce from Lazukić in October 2019.[18]

Public image

Recognized for publicly supporting LGBT rights, Bekvalac was honored with the title of a gay icon in 2019.[19][20] Furthermore, she served as the Belgrade Pride's "godmother" in 2021, where she stated that she is not an ally to the community, but a "part of it".[21]
