Geschichte

Vogue wurde von Madonna und Shep Pettibone geschrieben. Das Lied baut auf einem für die House-Musik der damaligen Zeit typischen Drumcomputer-Beat auf, über den eine synthetische Bassline, diverse Synthesizer-Sounds und House-typische Piano-Akkorde gelegt sind.

Im Text werden diverse Größen der „Goldenen Ära Hollywoods“ genannt: Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe und Ehemann Joe DiMaggio, Marlene Dietrich, Marlon Brando, Jimmy Dean, Grace Kelly, Jean Harlow, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Rita Hayworth, Lauren Bacall, Katharine Hepburn, Lana Turner und Bette Davis. Das Lied war ursprünglich als B-Seite zur Single Keep It Together geplant und entwickelte sich zu einem der größten Hits von Madonna. Das zugehörige Video, bei dem David Fincher Regie führte, war für neun MTV Video Music Awards nominiert und gewann drei davon. Außerdem gewann das Lied einen American Music Award.

Rezeption

Stephen Thomas Erlewine von Allmusic nannte Vogue "a detatched, affectionate celebration of transcendent pop and gay culture and stands as Madonna's finest single moment" ("eine herausragende, liebevolle Feier transzendenter Pop- und Gay-Kultur, Madonnas beste Einzelleistung").[1] Jose F. Promis auf derselben Website sprach von "einem der krönenden künstlerischen Erfolge" Madonnas, sowohl den Song wie das Video betreffend.[2] Erwähnung findet der Song im Lied Willkommen zurück (2021) von Clueso feat. Andreas Bourani.

Erfolg

Vogue erreichte Platz eins der Billboard Hot 100[3] und in Großbritannien, Platz 2 in der Schweiz und Platz 7 in Österreich. In Deutschland erreichte das Lied Platz 4 der Charts.[4]

"Vogue" is a song by American singer-songwriter Madonna from her second soundtrack album, I'm Breathless (1990). It was released as the first single from the album on March 27, 1990, by Sire Records. Madonna was inspired by vogue dancers and choreographers Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza and Luis Xtravaganza from the Harlem "House Ball" community, the origin of the dance form, and they introduced "vogueing" to her at the Sound Factory club in New York City. "Vogue" is a house song which set trends in dance music in the 1990s with strong influences of 1970s disco within its composition. "Vogue" also contains a spoken section, in which Madonna name-checks various "Golden Age" Hollywood stars. Lyrically, the song is about enjoying oneself on the dance floor no matter who one is and it contains a theme of escapism. "Vogue" has appeared in a remixed form on two of Madonna's greatest hits compilations: The Immaculate Collection (1990) and Celebration (2009).
