Descrizione


La canzone è scritta da Martin Kierszenbaum e Dave Stewart e prodotta da Kierszenbaum e Robert Orton. Il testo del brano risulta piuttosto ambiguo; non è chiaro a chi siano esattamente dirette le parole.

Il brano Friend or Foe è comparso nella terza stagione di Laguna Beach, programma di MTV.


Video musicale


Le t.A.T.u. girarono il video il 16 e 17 ottobre 2005 nei sobborghi di Los Angeles, nelle Bronson Caves (famose per essere state il set di diversi film western e della serie televisiva originale di Batman) a Hollywood da 1171 Production Group.[1] Il gruppo aveva già precedentemente lavorato con le t.A.T.u. in video come All About Us e Ljudi invalidy, oltre ad avere esperienza nel creare video a cantanti come Eminem e Céline Dion. Il video di Friend or Foe è stato diretto da James Cox[2] e prodotto da Billy Parks.

Nelle scene, Lena e Julia, entrambe vestite in nero, guidano verso le grotte a bordo di una Chevrolet Chevelle. Julia schiocca le dita e la musica parte, quindi le ragazze cominciano a cantare di fronte ad una folla di fan che balla freneticamente al ritmo della canzone. Le due ragazze si scambiano occhiate complici. Verso la fine, Julia arresta la musica e scende dal palco, avvicinandosi ad un pianoforte, col quale inizia a suonare. Quando ha finito, la musica riparte e lei e Lena tornano a cantare il resto della canzone.

In Italia il video fu presentato in anteprima esclusiva a TRL il 25 novembre 2005. Un Making of del video è stato inserito nel DVD del The Best.

Successo commerciale


Friend or Foe è stato l'ultimo singolo del duo a entrare in classifica nel Regno Unito. Ha raggiunto la posizione numero 48 nella UK Singles Chart[3] e si è classificata al 33º posto nella Eurochart Hot 100 Singles. Ha inoltre raggiunto la top 3 in Belgio (Fiandre) e in Ungheria, piazzandosi terza. In Italia il singolo ha debuttato alla posizione numero 17 e ha raggiunto il sedicesimo posto nella classifica italiana, rimanendovi complessivamente per sette settimane.[4] Nel resto d'Europa è riuscita a distinguersi meno, mentre ha riscosso maggior successo nei Paesi asiatici e in America Latina.
